Unless you have to sink almost 2 grand on the 1.2 L series, I would highly recommend this lens first. Got what I was looking for. Want awesome DOF. I wanted a lens that I could capture pictures of my daughter in low light situations, which I am in most of the time in our home. Great lens for the money, you won't be disappointed adding this baby to your collection. Buy this lens now. I have owned my 50mm 1.4 for almost a year now, and the versatility and glass quality from this sub L series is superb.
However, if you just can't spend that much you will be very happy with the F1.8. Zoomed in and out matching color, focus sharpness, and bokeh (background blur). Many of the F1.8 were sharper than the F1.4 but the F1.4 was a little better in indoor low light and of course bokeh. My conclusion was that they were about the same in overall picture quality but the F1.4 had much higher quality construction and the focus motor was much smoother and less noisy than the F1.8.If you can afford the extra money get the F1.4. I am new to photography and wanted a better lens for my XSI because the kit lens performance wasn't any better than my Canon point-and-shoot.I spent a good deal of time reading reviews of lenses and it came down to the Cannon $100 F1.8 or the $350 F1.4. Or, you can do what I did and by them both. So naturally, I immediatly ordered the F1.4 figuring that it must be better yet. Finally I selected the F1.8 and when I received it I took 8 or 10 pictures and they were just great, better than I expected. A few days later I had both lenses in my hands and I started taking lots of pictures with one and then the other and then compared them side by side on my big 24" computer monitor.
I can get a perfect shot of a completely dark room with the pop-up flash. On another note, why the Rebel XS.
The 20D is now selling for more than I paid 4 yrs ago, so it must be a desired product. At $409 (AMZ, 1/10) it has more features than my 20D at 1/3 the price.
I like this lens (AMZ,6/08, $218.xx). Actually reviews better than the 50mm f 1.2 L lens.
The 7D is on my wish list, waiting for a price drop. I use it on a EOS 20D and recently on a Rebel XS.
This is the lens that makes the SLR act like any "Snapshot" that I have used over the years, but with amazing IQ.
I had been looking for a prime lens for shooting portraits and deliberated between the Right out of the box on my EOS XSi this lens was fantastic.
i love this lens so much, and i think it was pretty reasonably priced for having such a wide f-stop. it is built strong, has beautiful shallow dof, and is great in low light. the usm makes a big difference. I loved the 50mm 1.8 II on my xsi. i tell everyone to get one. So i got a new 50mm 1.4 usm. but once i got a 5dmii the little plastic guy didnt live up. and i love it.
